A LANGUAGE OF PATTERNS · 3 MIN READ

Five elements. A different language for who you are.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are often called elements. In Chinese traditions, they can also be understood as phases or qualities of change.

An artistic arrangement illustrating the Five Elements

Meet the five qualities

Wood is traditionally associated with growth; Fire with warmth and expression; Earth with stability and nourishment; Metal with structure and refinement; Water with adaptability and flow. These associations are metaphors, not measurements of your character.

Relationships matter more than a label

A traditional reading considers the elements in relation to one another. A single label such as Wood does not describe an entire person. Context and the overall chart are part of the interpretation.

Take the idea into everyday life

Use the language as a prompt: where would you like more flexibility, structure, connection, or space to grow? You do not need to believe that a chart fixes your future to find a reflective question useful.
